Google and Apple have removed two mobile apps from their app stores. Both these mobile apps were providing eSIM service. The names of these two apps are Airalo and Holafly.

Both these apps have been removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store following an order from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The Department of Telecommunications had asked Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the country to block access to these apps and their sites.

According to the report, these companies need to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from DoT to start selling and providing services of eSIM in India, but none of them consider it necessary. One of these companies is from Singapore and the other is from Spain. Both of them did not have NOC.

DoT has also said that eSIMs can be sold or serviced only by authorized dealers and customers will be asked for identity proof before issuing eSIMs. E-SIM dealers have to provide this information to the Global SIM Security Agency.

What are e-SIMs?
E-SIM is a software-based SIM card that is activated through a QR code. eSIM can be activated only by the concerned telecom company. There will be no need for a physical SIM card in this. At present 8 e-SIMs can be installed in an iPhone.
