The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that about 97.5% of the Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banking system. The central bank said that only Rs 8,897 crore worth of notes are still with the public. RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 (2000 Note) denomination bank notes from circulation on May 19, 2023.
The public still has Rs 2,000 notes worth crores of rupees.
The central bank (RBI) said in the statement when the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 banknotes was announced on May 19, 2023, at the close of business on that day, a total of Rs 3.56 lakh crore worth of such notes were in circulation, while At the close of business on January 31, 2024, this amount reduced to Rs 8,897 crore. Thus, 97.5 percent of the total bank notes of Rs 2,000 in circulation till May 19, 2023, have been returned.

RBI said, Rs 2,000 banknotes will remain legal tender. People can deposit or exchange Rs 2,000 banknotes at 19 RBI offices across the country. People can send Rs 2,000 bank notes through India Post from any post office to any office of RBI for deposit in their bank accounts in India.
