Rishabh Pant’s IPL 2025 journey hasn’t been smooth sailing, and the frustration showed during the pre-match interaction in Kolkata. Captaining Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) this season, Pant admitted he wasn’t thrilled after losing the toss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Speaking at the toss, Pant said, “I am not very happy… with batting first,” reflecting the unease of being forced into a less-than-ideal start on a tricky surface.
While Pant clarified that he was happy with his team's overall performance, the moment offered a glimpse into the pressure mounting on the ₹27 crore captain, whose personal form has dipped since his Champions Trophy benching.
Rahane’s Surprise Call Stuns Everyone at the Toss
The real curveball came from KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who chose to bowl first after winning the toss—an unusual move in day games where batting first is typically favored. Even commentator Danny Morrison appeared shocked by Rahane’s decision.
Rahane, however, had his reasoning sorted. “The pitch looks good and it’s not too hot today, so the surface won’t deteriorate much. Also, one side of the boundary is quite short, so we’d rather chase,” he explained calmly.
Playing XI Shake-Up: Spencer Johnson In, Moeen Ali Out
Adding to the surprise, Rahane also made a bold change in the lineup, bringing in Australian pacer Spencer Johnson and leaving out all-rounder Moeen Ali. The move signals KKR’s focus on pace and exploiting early conditions, especially on the Eden Gardens wicket.
