South Korea Becomes Second Largest Beauty Exporter: South Korea's beauty industry is currently dominating the world. If you look at the skin care products in your home, chances are they'll include some Korean products. From face masks to the viral snail mucin cream, the craze for Korean beauty products is no longer limited to social media. Now, South Korea has surpassed the US in cosmetic exports to become the world's second largest beauty exporter. Only France is ahead of it on this list.
What is the secret of Korean beauty's success?
In fact, skin care products played a major role in this massive success. According to statistics, basic skin care products alone generated over $8.5 billion in exports, representing approximately 75 percent of total exports. In particular, demand for face masks and face packs has seen a significant surge. Domestic production of these products has increased by approximately 28 percent. Sales of makeup products like lipstick and lip balm are also growing rapidly.
The Korean beauty industry still boasts strong legacy companies, but new brands are also rapidly gaining ground. One new brand jumped from 21st place to fourth in just one year. Several manufacturing companies have reached billions of dollars in production value.
The picture is changing.
Once upon a time, Korean beauty products were seen only as cheap and trendy items, but now the picture has completely changed. Industry experts say that K-beauty is no longer a fringe trend, but has become a permanent part of the global beauty market. Consumers, especially in the US and Europe, are increasingly trusting Korean brands.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, K-beauty exports increased by 11.8 percent last year, reaching a record $11.4 billion. Most notably, the cosmetics trade surplus surpassed $10 billion for the first time. The beauty industry alone contributed approximately 13 percent of South Korea's total national trade profit.
Americans are becoming obsessed with Korean products.
The biggest change was seen in the export market. China was once considered the largest buyer of Korean beauty brands, but now the United States has replaced it. American consumers purchased approximately $2.2 billion worth of Korean cosmetics, representing nearly a fifth of total exports. Exports to China, on the other hand, declined by 19 percent, while Japan remained in third place.
Dominance in Europe, too
Korean beauty products are also rapidly gaining popularity in Europe. Purchases of Korean cosmetics in Poland have increased by 115 percent. In France, considered a hub of the luxury beauty industry, demand for Korean beauty products has reached record levels. Last year, supplies to France increased by 71.5 percent, surpassing $100 million. Famous Paris department stores now have dedicated K-beauty sections, where many Korean brands are readily available.
