CJI B R Gavai has resumed the practice of lawyers seeking urgent listing of cases and verbal mentioning of cases for hearing. This was discontinued by former CJI Sanjiv Khanna.

Chief Justice (CJI) Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai has said that from August 11, no senior advocate will be allowed to list cases as urgent or mention the case in his court. CJI Gavai wants junior lawyers to also get this opportunity. On Wednesday (August 6, 2025), CJI BR Gavai directed the court master to issue a notice in this regard.
According to a PTI report, CJI Gavai said, "There is a strong demand that no cases should be mentioned by senior advocates." He asked the court staff to issue a notice that from Monday, no senior advocate will be allowed to mention cases in his court for urgent listing and hearing.
Chief Justice Gavai said, 'From Monday, no senior advocate will be allowed to mention cases. Junior lawyers should be given the opportunity to do so.'
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who was present in the court to mention a case, said he had no problem if it applies to all senior advocates. The Chief Justice said, "At least in my court, it will be followed." He said it was up to other Supreme Court judges whether they adopt this practice or not.
Usually, lawyers mention their cases before a bench headed by the Chief Justice at the beginning of the day's proceedings to make a list of cases and hear the cases on the basis of urgency.
Earlier, CJI BR Gavai had resumed the practice of oral mention of cases by lawyers for urgent listing and hearing, which was stopped during the tenure of former Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna. Former CJI Sanjeev Khanna had stopped the process of oral mention of cases by lawyers for urgent listing and hearing and asked them to send email or written letter.
