IPL Purple Cap Winners 2008 to 2024

The IPL Purple Cap is awarded to the highest wicket-taker of the season, one of the highest individual honours in the tournament. Pakistan's Sohail Tanvir won the Purple Cap in the inaugural season in 2008 while playing for Rajasthan Royals.

He played a key role in the Royals becoming the IPL champions for the first time by taking 22 wickets in 11 matches. Tanvir's best performance that season was 6/14 against Chennai Super Kings. This record remained in the history of IPL for more than a decade, which was broken by Mumbai Indians' West Indian fast bowler Alzari Joseph in 2019.

After this, Indian bowlers of Deccan Chargers won the Purple Cap in two consecutive seasons. Fast bowler RP Singh achieved this feat in 2009, when the Chargers won the IPL trophy. While spin bowler Pragyan Ojha won this title in 2010.

At the same time, in 2011, Sri Lankan veteran fast bowler Lasith Malinga won the Purple Cap. He took 28 wickets in 16 matches, which was the record for the most wickets in a single season at that time. However, Malinga's record lasted only for a few seasons, which was broken by Dwayne Bravo. This star West Indies all-rounder took 32 wickets in 18 matches in IPL 2013.

Bravo's record remained unbroken for eight seasons and Indian fast bowler Harshal Patel equaled this record by taking 32 wickets in 15 matches in IPL 2021. Bravo became the first bowler in IPL history to win the Purple Cap more than once. He achieved this feat again in 2015 by taking the most 26 wickets.

At the same time, Bhuvneshwar Kumar joined Bravo's club by winning the Purple Cap twice in a row in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, he took 23 wickets for Sunrisers Hyderabad and helped the team win their first title. Bhuvneshwar is the only bowler to win the IPL Purple Cap twice in a row.

Harshal Patel is the only player to date to have won the Purple Cap for two different teams. After a stellar performance for RCB in 2021, he took 24 wickets in 14 matches for Punjab Kings in 2024. In 2019, South Africa's Imran Tahir became the first spinner to win the Purple Cap after Pragyan Ojha.

That season, Tahir's Chennai Super Kings finished runners-up in the final against Mumbai Indians. Apart from Patel and Bravo, South Africa's Kagiso Rabada is the only other bowler to reach the 30-wicket mark. Rabada achieved this feat for Delhi Capitals and won the Purple Cap in 2020.
