IPL 2025: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, known as Mahi and Captain Cool among his friends and fans, is one of the most iconic players of Indian cricket. Under his captaincy, India won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. He retired from international cricket on 15 August 2020, but continues to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His price money was cut drastically in IPL 2025 i.e. the 18th season of IPL. For this year's tournament, his price money was cut by about Rs 11 crore compared to the 17th season of IPL played in 2024.

Highest bid on Dhoni in 2008 IPL

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has made his mark with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. Dhoni was bought by CSK in the 2008 auction for $1.5 million (about Rs 6 crore), which was the highest bid at that time. Dhoni played for CSK from 2008 to 2015 and led the team to three IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018). However, due to a two-year ban on CSK in 2016 and 2017, Dhoni played for Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS). RPS bought him for Rs 12.5 crore.

Retained for Rs 15 crore in 2018

After CSK's return in 2018, Dhoni rejoined the team and was retained for Rs 15 crore. This amount remained the same from 2018 to 2021. Before the mega auction in 2022, CSK retained Dhoni for Rs 12 crore, a reduction of Rs 3 crore compared to the previous season. He was retained for the same amount in 2023 and 2024 as well. Apart from IPL, Dhoni played for the Indian national cricket team from 2004 to 2019. He retired from Test cricket in 2014, but continued to play in ODIs and T20s. In 2019, he announced his retirement from international cricket. Currently, Dhoni is active only in IPL and does not participate in any other competitive cricket.

CSK won five IPL titles under Dhoni's captaincy

Under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK has won IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. His leadership ability and playing skills have made him one of the most successful captains in IPL history.
