The accident occurred on May 4 while Pawandeep was traveling from his hometown in Uttarakhand to Noida with friends. The car was being driven by a man named Rahul Singh, who allegedly dozed off at the wheel. The vehicle lost control and plunged from an overbridge, crashing into the back of a parked canter on the highway.

Pawandeep and two others—Rahul Singh and Ajay Mehra—sustained serious injuries.

Initially rushed to a local government hospital, Pawandeep was quickly referred to Moradabad and then to Noida for advanced treatment. Fortis Hospital later issued a statement:
