World's Second Largest Metro Network: India will surpass America in metro
New metro routes are being continuously opened across the country, and existing ones are being rapidly expanded. As a result, the total length of India's metro rail network has now reached 1,170 kilometers.
The government estimates that, given the pace at which metro rail is expanding in the country, India could surpass the United States in terms of the length of its metro network within the next two years. If this happens, India will become the country with the second largest metro rail network in the world, after China.
What's the difference between the US and India?
According to Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal, the US currently has a metro rail network of approximately 1,386 kilometers. In India, the network has reached 1,170 kilometers.
This leaves a gap of approximately 216 kilometers between the two countries. Given the rapid pace at which new routes are being built in India, the government hopes to close this gap within the next two years.
How much has the metro network grown since 2014?
Metro rail in India has expanded rapidly in the last few years. In 2014, only five cities in the country had a metro rail network spanning approximately 245 kilometers. Now, metro rail has expanded to 26 cities, with a total network length of 1,170 kilometers. This means that in just a decade, both the reach and length of metro rail in the country have increased significantly.
Who leads the way?
China currently leads the world in terms of the length of its metro rail network, with a network of approximately 8,000 kilometers. This is followed by the United States and India.
India's goal is no longer to provide metro rail networks only in major cities. Metro rail projects are underway in many other cities across the country. With the completion of new routes, India's metro network will expand further.
How are things in Indore?
Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has joined the growing metro rail network. A new metro rail route was recently inaugurated here. With this, the metro rail service in Indore now covers a length of approximately 17 kilometers, with 16 stations along the new route.
