India Declares Three-Day State Mourning After Death of Pope Francis; PM Modi Pays Tribute to 'Symbol of Compassion'

India has declared a three-day state mourning to honor the passing of Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of the global Catholic community, who died on Monday morning. The announcement was made by the Union Home Ministry, directing that the national flag be flown at half-mast across all government buildings and suspending all official entertainment programs during the mourning period.
According to the government order, the mourning will span Tuesday, April 22, and Wednesday, April 23, with an additional day of mourning on the day of the Pope’s funeral.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the pontiff’s passing, calling him a "symbol of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage." In a heartfelt message, PM Modi said:
"I am deeply saddened by the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis. My heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community. He will be remembered by millions for his unwavering dedication to the poor and underprivileged, and for spreading the ideals of Jesus Christ. I fondly recall my meetings with him—his vision for inclusive development and his warmth towards India were truly inspiring. May his soul rest in peace in the lap of God."
