The first semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2025 is set to witness an intense clash between India and Australia. Scheduled to take place in Dubai on March 4, this highly anticipated encounter has fans excited. However, weather forecasts indicate a possibility of rain, which raises the question: What happens if the match is abandoned or ends in a draw?
India vs Australia: Who Will Advance If Rain Cancels the Semi-Final?
India has secured a spot in the semi-finals by winning all their group-stage matches. However, captain Rohit Sharma is well aware of Australia's strong record in knockout games. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Rohit acknowledged the challenge posed by the Australian side. Indian fans are eager to see their team defeat Australia and avenge the loss in the 2023 World Cup final. However, with rain concerns in Dubai, there is uncertainty surrounding the match.
So far, three matches in the Champions Trophy 2025 have been called off due to rain—Australia vs South Africa, Pakistan vs Bangladesh, and Afghanistan vs Australia. The first semi-final between India and Australia will be held in Dubai, while the second semi-final between South Africa and New Zealand will take place at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Reserve Day Allocated for Semi-Final Matches
The semi-final between India and Australia is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, at 2:30 PM (IST) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Notably, the tournament organizers have designated a reserve day for both semi-finals. If rain disrupts the match, it will resume from the same point on the reserve day.
What If the Match Is Abandoned Even on the Reserve Day?
If rain continues and prevents the match from being completed even on the reserve day, the team with the better net run rate (NRR) from the group stage will advance to the final. As things stand, India will qualify for the final in case of a complete washout, while Australia will be eliminated.
Similarly, in the second semi-final, if the South Africa vs New Zealand match is abandoned due to rain, South Africa will move to the final as they have five points and an impressive NRR of +2.395, compared to New Zealand’s four points and an NRR of +0.267.
What Happens If the Match Ends in a Draw?
If the India vs Australia semi-final ends in a draw, a Super Over will determine the winner. In the event of a tie, both teams will play a single-over eliminator, with the team scoring the most runs emerging victorious. The Super Over continues until a clear winner is decided.
With the unpredictability of rain in Dubai, fans will be hoping for a full match. However, in case of interruptions, these regulations will decide which team gets the ticket to the Champions Trophy 2025 final.
