Your email address can play an important role in keeping your Facebook account accessible and secure. It may be used for account-related notifications, login verification, password recovery and other security processes. However, many people continue using Facebook accounts that are linked to email addresses they created years ago and no longer regularly access.
If the email address connected to your Facebook account has become inactive, or you simply want to replace it with another one, Facebook provides options for managing your contact information through Meta's Accounts Centre.
Users can add another email address, verify it and remove an email address they no longer want associated with the account. Before deleting an old address, however, it is advisable to make sure that your new email has been successfully added and verified.
Here's how the process works.
How to Add a New Email Address to Facebook
The exact appearance of menus may differ slightly depending on whether you use Facebook on Android, iPhone or a computer, as well as the version of the app. However, the email-management options can generally be found through Accounts Centre.
Step 1: Open Facebook
Launch the Facebook app on your smartphone or open Facebook in a web browser. Sign in to the account for which you want to change the email address.
Open the account menu by tapping or clicking your profile picture.
Step 2: Open Facebook Settings
From the available menu, select Settings & privacy and then open Settings.
This section contains controls related to your Facebook account, privacy, security and other preferences.
Step 3: Go to Accounts Centre
Look for Accounts Centre inside Settings and open it.
Accounts Centre is Meta's central location for managing certain information and settings across connected Meta accounts.
Step 4: Find Your Contact Information
Inside Accounts Centre, open Personal details and then select Contact info.
You should be able to see the email addresses and other contact details currently associated with your account.
Step 5: Add Your New Email
Select Add new contact and choose the option to Add email address.
Enter the new email address carefully. If Accounts Centre asks you to select the account where the address should be added, choose the appropriate Facebook account and continue.
Make sure there are no spelling mistakes in the email address before proceeding.
Step 6: Verify the New Address
For security purposes, Facebook may send a confirmation or verification code to the newly entered email address.
Open your email inbox, find the message containing the code and enter it on Facebook when requested.
Once verification is completed successfully, the new address should become associated with your account.
How to Remove an Old Email Address From Facebook
If an outdated email is still connected to your Facebook account, you may be able to remove it through the same Accounts Centre section.
Open Settings & privacy > Settings > Accounts Centre > Personal details > Contact info.
Select the email address you want to remove and choose the available option to delete it. Facebook may ask you to confirm the action before making the change.
As an additional security measure, you could also be asked to enter your Facebook password again. Follow the on-screen verification steps to complete the removal.
The wording of individual buttons may vary depending on your device and Facebook version.
Add the New Email Before Removing the Old One
If your intention is simply to replace an outdated email address, it is safer to add and verify the new address first rather than immediately deleting the existing one.
Once the new email has been successfully confirmed, you can review the contact information associated with your account and remove the old address if Facebook allows it.
This approach can reduce the risk of creating account-recovery problems if something goes wrong during the process.
Why Keeping Your Facebook Email Updated Matters
An accessible email address can become particularly important if you forget your password, Facebook detects unusual account activity or you need to complete an identity or security check.
If your account remains linked only to an email inbox you can no longer access, recovering the account could become more difficult.
Users should therefore periodically review the email addresses and phone numbers connected to their Facebook accounts and remove contact information that is no longer under their control.
Important Security Checks Before Changing Your Email
Before making changes, ensure that the new email account is active and that you know its password. You should also confirm that you can receive Facebook's verification messages.
Never share a Facebook verification code or password with another person. If you receive an unexpected request for a code when you are not changing your account information, do not provide it to anyone.
It is also a good idea to review your Facebook security settings and enable additional login protection where available.
Keeping your email address current may seem like a small account-maintenance task, but it can make a significant difference when you need to recover your Facebook account or respond to a security issue.
