Reaching 10,000 runs in Test cricket is considered a monumental achievement for any batsman. This record is held only by players who have consistently performed exceptionally well over a long period of time. India has produced many great batsmen in Test cricket, but only three Indians have ever made it to this exclusive club. Surprisingly, Virat Kohli, considered one of the most successful batsmen of the modern era, is not part of this list. Despite a brilliant Test career, he retired before reaching 10,000 runs.
1. Sachin Tendulkar
The world record for most runs in Test cricket is held by India's legendary batsman, Sachin Tendulkar. He played 200 Test matches from 1989 to 2013, scoring 15,921 runs in 329 innings. His batting average was 53.78. During this period, Sachin scored 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries. His record as the highest run-scorer in Test cricket still stands today.
2. Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid is second on this list. He scored 13,265 runs in 284 innings across 163 Test matches between 1996 and 2012, averaging 52.63. Dravid scored 36 centuries and 63 half-centuries in his career. He is known as "The Wall" for his long and patient innings in difficult conditions.
3. Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar was the first Indian batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs. He scored 10,122 runs in 125 Test matches between 1971 and 1987, averaging 51.12. Gavaskar scored 34 centuries and 45 half-centuries. For a long time, he held the world record for most Test centuries.
Why is Virat Kohli not in this club?
Virat Kohli played many memorable innings in Test cricket and led India to several historic victories. He scored 9,230 runs in 210 innings across 123 Test matches between 2011 and 2025, scoring 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. Although he needed 770 more runs to reach 10,000 runs, he retired from Test cricket before that date. Consequently, he was unable to join this prestigious club.
