Indian Railways: People consider Indian Railways to be the best for long journeys. Be it through general coaches or AC coaches. Railways provide its passengers with a comfortable journey along with many other facilities. If you are travelling in an AC coach, then you are given a bed roll by the Railways. In this, two sheets, a blanket, pillow are given to the passengers. However, passengers do not like these facilities provided by the Railways and these items get stolen.
There have been many such cases in which passengers travelling in trains take away the bed sheets, blankets and pillows provided during the journey. Railway staff has to bear the brunt of this theft of goods and even money is deducted from their salary. But do you know that if you steal the bed roll items, it can cost you heavily and there is a provision of fine for this as well.
Items have to be handed over to the staff
If you are travelling by train, then in AC coaches, you are provided with a bed roll for a comfortable journey. It is the responsibility of the passenger to hand over this item to the railway staff after the journey is over or keep it safely on his seat. Many times passengers take this item with them. According to a report of 2017-18, 1.95 lakh towels, 81,736 bedsheets, 5,038 pillows, 55,573 pillow covers and 7043 blankets were stolen from Western Railway.
You can get this punishment
If you steal a bedsheet, pillow or blanket while travelling in a train and take it with you, then the railway can take action against you. According to the Railway Property Act, 1966, if caught for the first time with stolen goods, then there can be a punishment of one year or a fine of up to Rs 1000. If the case is serious, then there is a provision of both 5 years of imprisonment and fine.
