Heatwave Alerts in India: The ministry has advised people to drink as much water as possible, avoid the scorching afternoon sun, wear light cotton clothes, and avoid dehydration.
How to avoid extreme heat and heat waves?
How To Protect Yourself from Heatwaves: The heat wave continues to intensify, and in light of this, the Ministry of AYUSH issued a public health advisory on May 18th regarding protection from the scorching heat and heatwave. The ministry advised people to drink plenty of water, avoid the intense midday sun, wear light cotton clothing, and avoid dehydration. The advisory states that symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, high body temperature, fainting, seizures, or changes in mental status should not be ignored, as these could be signs of heat stroke.
Who should be most cautious?
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, this advisory is especially important for the general public, as well as children, pregnant women, the elderly, outdoor laborers, and those with chronic conditions such as heart disease or high blood pressure. Emphasis is also placed on providing shade, rest breaks, and frequent water supply at workplaces and public events.
What should be done to keep the body cool?
The advisory also mentions traditional remedies from Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, and homeopathy. Drinking buttermilk, coconut water, lemonade, and electrolyte-rich beverages is recommended to keep the body cool. Traditional beverages like Nimbukphal Panak, Amra Prapanak, and Chinchha Panak are also cited as beneficial in summer. The ministry also recommends including cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon, muskmelon, ash gourd, tomato, and lemon in your daily diet.
When can I lose my life?
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, extreme heat prevents the body from cooling properly, which can lead to serious illness and even death. Young children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses are most at risk, the organization says.
What is the way to keep the body hydrated?
According to experts, the most important thing to avoid heatstroke is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Caffeine and sugary beverages should be avoided, as these can worsen dehydration. Coconut water, lemon water, and electrolyte drinks help maintain essential minerals in the body.
Do not leave the house for this many hours
The sun is considered most dangerous between 12 noon and 4 pm. It's best to stay indoors during this time. If you must go outside, it's best to use an umbrella, hat, and sunglasses. Wearing light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothing helps keep the body cool.
Pay attention to food items
Experts also advise avoiding fried and spicy foods, as these increase body heat. If someone experiences excessive sweating, dizziness, weakness, or muscle cramps, they should be immediately taken to a cool place and given water. If necessary, seek medical help immediately.
