Many people are troubled by the problem of darkening of underarms. This can be due to shaving, sweat or chemicals present in the products. Let us tell you why underarms turn dark and what are the easy ways to restore their color?
Why do underarms become dark?
Underarms turn dark due to extra production of melanin and increased thickness of the skin. According to a study in the Journal of Dermatology (2025), about 40 percent of people face this problem due to shaving, waxing, aluminum chloride present in deodorants and tight clothes. However, hormonal changes, diabetes or obesity can also increase melanin production, which darkens the skin color. Skin inflammation increases due to accumulation of sweat and bacteria, which is another reason for darkening of underarms. According to Dr. Priya Sharma, skin expert at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Delhi, darkening of underarms is mostly connected to external reasons, but internal health like hormonal imbalance can also be responsible for it.
When can dark underarms be a cause of worry?
Blackness in the underarms is initially light brown, which may darken over time. According to the International Journal of Cosmetology (2024), if it is accompanied by itching, burning or odor, it may be a signal of skin infection or fungal growth. If the blackness increases suddenly or physical changes like weight gain are seen, then it may be a symptom of diabetes or hormonal problem. If there is dryness or pain in the skin along with blackness in the underarms, then one should immediately consult a skin expert. This may not be just a cosmetic problem.
These methods can bring back the complexion
- Lemon and honey: A mixture of lemon juice and honey is exfoliating and moisturizing. The vitamin C present in lemon reduces melanin production. It should be applied for 10 minutes and then washed off, which gives good results.
- Aloe vera: Aloe vera gel has anti-inflammatory properties, which improve the complexion of the skin. Apply it overnight and wash it off in the morning.
- Turmeric and curd: Turmeric paste and curd brightens the skin. Apply it for 15 minutes and wash it with lukewarm water.
Improvement in hygiene
Avoid shaving and waxing as they damage the skin. Hair removal cream or laser hair removal causes less damage to the skin. In such a situation, wear loose cotton clothes and use natural talcum powder instead of deodorants.
Moisturisation and Sunscreen
Moisturizing the underarms reduces skin thickness. Shea butter or cocoa butter creams soften the skin. Using sunscreen (SPF 30+) also protects against UV rays, which can increase darkening.
