Guillain Barre syndrome Symptoms: Guillain Barre syndrome can lead to paralysis and be life-threatening if not treated in time. In such a situation, it is important to understand the symptoms to identify it at an early stage.

Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a rare health condition, but the increasing number of cases and deaths in Maharashtra and Pune has made it serious. In this, the body's immune system starts attacking its own peripheral nerves. This syndrome is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection, but in some cases it can also develop after vaccines or surgery.
Recently, while talking to HT, Dr. Rajesh B Iyer, neurologist at Manipal Hospital, Millers Road, said that Guillain Barre syndrome occurs when peripheral nerve damage occurs due to immune reaction in the body. This condition is usually seen after respiratory or internal infections and in very few cases after vaccines or surgery. Paralysis is very common in people suffering from this syndrome. Not only this, this condition can be life-threatening if not identified and treated in time.
Relationship between Guillain Barre syndrome and paralysis
According to Dr. Iyer, in Guillain Barre syndrome, the physical covering of the nerves (myelin) gets damaged, due to which these nerves are not able to function properly. Myelin helps in insulating the nerves and sending signals quickly. If this myelin physical covering gets damaged, it can cause swelling and weakness in the nerve fibers, which causes paralysis. Its effect is first seen in the legs.
Guillain Barre Syndrome
Symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome usually appear one to two weeks after infection. According to Dr. Rajesh B. Iyer, initially the patient feels tingling in the fingers and feet and pain and cramps in the muscles. After this, this weakness starts increasing and paralysis gradually starts spreading upwards from the lower part of the body. This process can also reach the waist, hands, respiratory muscles and brain.
Treatment options
The treatment of Guillain-Barre syndrome depends on the severity of the symptoms. In mild cases, treatment may be limited to monitoring and supportive care. But if the impairment is severe, treatment may include the use of intravenous human immunoglobulin or a procedure called plasmapheresis, which is a dialysis-like procedure to remove antibodies from the blood. This process helps reduce the immune reaction in the body.
