Groom Arrested in Sherwani Moments Before Mounting Mare—Wanted in Rape Case in Madhya Pradesh

A wedding in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, turned into a shocking scene when the groom—dressed in sherwani and sehra, ready to mount the mare—was arrested by police just before the wedding procession could begin.

Why Was He Arrested?

The groom, Bharat Saket (32), was a wanted accused in a rape case filed at the University police station. According to the complaint, he had allegedly raped a woman between July and December 2024 under the false promise of marriage and later backed out. The victim eventually filed a complaint in March 2025, prompting police to begin a search for him.

How the Arrest Unfolded

The police learned that Bharat's wedding was scheduled for Wednesday, with the baraat (wedding procession) traveling from Gadh to Rewa. Acting swiftly, they reached the Janmaasa (wedding stop) just as preparations were underway. While guests were having breakfast and the groom was preparing to mount the mare, officers moved in and took him into custody, leaving the wedding party stunned.

The Fallout

The arrest not only halted the wedding but also led to chaos and shock among both families and guests. The police took the groom to the station for questioning and legal processing. According to officials, he had been absconding and was using the wedding to discreetly begin a new chapter elsewhere.

This case once again underscores how false promises of marriage and sexual exploitation are being treated seriously by law enforcement, and how ceremonial occasions do not shield the accused from justice.
