Government Raises Questions Over WhatsApp's Proposed Username Feature

One of the key issues under review is WhatsApp's proposed username feature.

Authorities have reportedly asked Meta not to introduce this feature in India until concerns raised by the government have been addressed. Officials are evaluating whether usernames could make it easier for cybercriminals to impersonate individuals, mislead users, or facilitate online fraud.

The government is seeking additional details from the company regarding the purpose, implementation, and potential safeguards associated with the feature before it is rolled out.

Separately, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has reportedly issued a notice to Telegram over concerns related to copyright infringement and the circulation of pirated content.

Authorities are seeking information on the platform's content moderation mechanisms and the steps it takes to address copyright violations in accordance with Indian laws.

The issue highlights the government's continued focus on tackling digital piracy alongside broader cybersecurity initiatives.

Meta Also Under Scrutiny Over Instagram Advertisements

Meta is facing another line of inquiry concerning advertisements displayed on Instagram.

According to reports, authorities are investigating allegations that certain advertisements containing inappropriate content involving children appeared on the platform. The matter is currently under examination as officials assess whether existing safeguards and moderation systems were adequate.

The company has been asked to provide relevant information regarding its advertising review and content moderation processes.

MeitY Secretary Explains the Government's Concerns

Speaking on the issue, MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan reportedly said that the government's concerns extend beyond isolated incidents and relate to the broader architecture and design of digital platforms.

He explained that features enabling alternative user identities, such as usernames, may increase the possibility of impersonation, identity misuse, and cyber fraud if appropriate safeguards are not in place.

According to him, the government has therefore requested WhatsApp to clarify the necessity of introducing the feature, its intended purpose, and the mechanisms that would prevent misuse.

The objective, he indicated, is to evaluate whether such features could inadvertently create new opportunities for online criminals.

Clarifications Sought From Multiple Technology Companies

Officials have also confirmed that similar requests for explanations have been sent to other technology companies as part of the government's wider efforts to strengthen digital accountability and user protection.

Rather than focusing on a single issue, the government is reviewing multiple aspects of online platforms, including cybersecurity, user identity management, privacy mechanisms, piracy prevention, and child safety.
