Gautam Gambhir Lawsuit Against Deepfake: Indian cricket team head coach, former MP, and World Cup-winning player Gautam Gambhir has approached the Delhi High Court over the misuse of his identity. He has filed a civil suit in the court alleging that his name, face, and voice are being misused on social media and the internet. Gambhir alleges that numerous fake videos and posts are being circulated in his name.
In his petition filed with the Delhi High Court, Gambhir alleges that over the past few months, several fake videos and posts have been circulating online in his name. These videos, using deepfake and artificial intelligence (AI) technology, are made to appear as if he is making statements that he did not actually make.
According to his lawyers, a fake resignation video was viewed nearly 2.9 million times on social media, while another video showing him commenting on senior cricketers playing in the World Cup was viewed nearly 1.7 million times.
Many companies, including social media, were made parties.
In his petition filed in the Delhi High Court, Gautam Gambhir has named several social media accounts as parties, as well as major companies. These include companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Meta, X, and Google. It is alleged that posters and other merchandise bearing his name and image are being sold on these platforms without permission. Gambhir has requested the court to ensure that his name, image, voice, or identity are not used in any way without his written permission. He has also requested an interim order to immediately remove the fake videos and posts.
Gautam Gambhir has demanded Rs 2.5 crore in damages.
Gambhir's lawyer stated in court that his identity is being used to spread misinformation and make money. This is not just a personal matter, but a question of protecting the law and dignity. He has also sought damages of approximately ₹2.5 crore in this case.
