After yet another disappointing run by Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025, the cricket board is once again on the hunt for a new coach — and this time, they might be eyeing a familiar name from Virat Kohli’s corner.
Mike Hesson, the former New Zealand coach and the strategic mastermind behind Royal Challengers Bangalore’s turnaround in the IPL, has emerged as the frontrunner to take charge of Pakistan cricket’s top job. His name tops the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) list as they search for a coach who can bring direction and discipline to the struggling side.
Hesson’s IPL Legacy: RCB’s Silent Architect
Hesson served as Director of Cricket Operations at RCB from 2019 to 2023, where he worked closely with Virat Kohli and became known for his sharp analytical mindset and calm leadership. His data-driven strategies helped RCB reach the playoffs three consecutive years (2020-2022), even if the elusive IPL title remained out of reach.
Currently, he coaches Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) — a stint that has already earned him the trust of several PCB officials. Sources say talks with Hesson are in the early stages, but there’s optimism on both sides. If things fall into place, he may soon wear the green as Pakistan’s head coach.
But He’s Not Alone in the Race
While Hesson leads the pack, Simon Katich (Australia) and Luke Ronchi (New Zealand) are also reportedly being considered for the role. The PCB is said to be keen on hiring someone with international and franchise experience, someone who can rebuild the team’s confidence and performance after years of inconsistency.
Pakistan’s Crisis: A Coach’s Challenge
Pakistan’s recent form has been nothing short of alarming. The team failed to win a single match in the Champions Trophy — despite the tournament being hosted at home — and then suffered a humiliating whitewash in New Zealand. Interim coach Aaqib Javed stepped down amid widespread criticism, leaving the PCB desperate for a long-term solution.
With several high-profile coaching experiments already behind them — including stints by Jason Gillespie, Mickey Arthur, and Gary Kirsten — the board is now looking for a steady hand who can overhaul the team from the grassroots.
If Mike Hesson does take the job, it would mark a dramatic shift: the man who once stood quietly beside Kohli, now at the helm of Kohli’s fiercest rivals.
