In the wake of the devastating Pahalgam terror attack, a sense of paralysis and fear has gripped Neelam Valley in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The local administration, anticipating possible retaliation from India, has declared a blackout, leading to a near lockdown situation in the region.
Blackout Imposed Amid Fears of Indian Attack
Local media reports that the Kashmir administration has decided to cut off electricity across the Neelam Valley, a strategic region just 3 kilometers from the Line of Control (LoC), which divides the disputed Kashmir territory. The blackout is seen as a preventive measure aimed at avoiding any strategic advantage that could come with access to electricity, particularly during a potential night-time strike. Authorities believe this will hamper any real-time information flow, which could offer India crucial insights for a strike.
Neelam Valley's Desolation: Tourism and Life at a Standstill
Once a popular tourist destination, Neelam Valley now echoes with silence. Following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, both locals and tourists have avoided the area, fearing a retaliatory strike by India. With temperatures soaring, the absence of both visitors and local activity is striking. Around 200,000 Kashmiri residents live in the valley, and now, many have sought refuge in underground bunkers as tensions rise.
A Dreaded Proximity to the Line of Control
The Neelam Valley lies dangerously close to the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto boundary dividing India and Pakistan. While the valley has long been claimed by India, it remains under Pakistan’s control as part of the larger dispute over Kashmir. The current situation has only added to the long-standing anxiety in the region.
Lockdown Measures and Administrative Actions
In an unprecedented move, the Kashmir administration took drastic steps, including canceling the leave of all administrative officers, signaling the gravity of the situation. With military preparedness ramping up, officials stress that the blackout is necessary to mitigate the risk of information leaks or a targeted attack by Indian forces, especially as tensions mount over the Pahalgam incident.
