Fable 5 poses a cyberattack threat... The US has banned the most powerful AI model, blocking access for Indian users.

The US government feared that Fable 5 could be used to gather information about cyberattacks, biological, or chemical weapons. However, Anthropic denied this claim.

Ban on America's AI model

Anthropic launched the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 9, 2026. However, just three days after the launch, on the night of June 12, the US government, citing national security concerns, ordered the company to immediately block access to these models for any foreign national. The order also stated that this ban would apply to foreign nationals living in the US, as well as Anthropic's own foreign employees.

Anthropic said that because it couldn't identify which users were foreign nationals and which were not, it discontinued both models for everyone. The company's remaining Claude models are still working.

Jailbreak fears - Anthropic calls it a misunderstanding.

The US government says that a company claimed to have jailbroken Fable 5. Jailbreaking means extracting information from an AI that it normally refuses to provide. For example, if you ask an AI how to make a bomb, it will refuse, but jailbreaking tricks it into giving up information it shouldn't.

Fable 5 could be used for cyber and chemical weapons.

The US government feared that Fable 5 could be used to obtain information about cyberattacks, biological, or chemical weapons. However, Anthropic denied this claim. The company said it reviewed the government's demo and found that the jailbreak was very limited and did not pose a widespread threat. In a statement, Anthropic said, "We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible." This is the first time the US government has shut down an AI company's live model by subjecting it to export controls. Until now, such regulations applied to chips and hardware, but now AI software is also covered. This is being considered a major turning point in the history of AI regulation.

Impact on India and the big question

This matter is also important for India because a large number of Indian startups, IT companies, and developers rely on Anthropic's API. Those developing products based on Fable 5 were halted overnight. This incident also serves as a reminder of how dependent countries like India are on American AI technology and how important it is to build our own AI infrastructure.
