Are Eggs Safe To Eat In India? From time to time, we hear new stories about eggs. Let us tell you whether they pose any health risks or are all just rumors.

Health effects of eggs
FSSAI Rejects Cancer Claims Linked To Eggs: Nowadays, in the age of social media, people keep posting anything to become famous. However, sometimes the limit is crossed when these posts are related to your health. Recently, it was being claimed in social media posts that a banned chemical called Nitrofuran has been found in eggs. People termed it a cancer-causing substance. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has strongly rejected the claims linking eggs to cancer. FSSAI clearly stated in its report that eggs sold in India are completely safe, and the recent reports and social media posts are scientifically baseless, which spread unnecessary fear.
The use of nitrofuran is completely banned.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India also clarified concerns about nitrofuran metabolites. These are trace markers that can be found in eggs if nitrofuran antibiotics, banned in poultry farming, are used illegally. According to the FSSAI, the use of nitrofurans is strictly prohibited at all stages of poultry and egg production under India's food safety regulations. Therefore, claims of eggs containing cancer-causing substances are misleading.
FSSAI stated that the excess maximum residue limit of 1.0 microgram per kilogram for nitrofuran metabolites is only a regulatory limit for detection and not a predictable quantity. Minor presence below the EMRL is neither considered a food safety violation nor poses any health risk.
FSSAI also stated that India's standards are in line with global regulations. The European Union and the United States also ban nitrofurans, and such reference standards are used only for enforcement purposes, not for setting safety limits. Differences in data across countries are due to testing techniques, not differences in safety standards.
Does it cause cancer?
From a public health perspective, FSSAI clarified that there is no causal relationship between dietary intake of very low levels of nitrofuran metabolites and cancer. No global health organization has linked normal egg consumption to an increased risk of cancer. Responding to reports related to a particular brand, FSSAI stated that such cases are isolated and batch-specific, often resulting from unintentional contamination or feed-related issues. They do not represent the entire egg supply chain. FSSAI urged consumers to rely on official advice and scientific evidence, reiterating that eggs prepared and used according to established standards remain a source of energy and a safe diet.
How beneficial are eggs for health?
When it comes to the health benefits of eggs, the 2025 Framingham Offspring Study revealed that those who consumed five or more eggs a week had a lower risk of pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. This is likely due to the antioxidant proteins found in eggs.
