Addressing a parliamentary committee on foreign affairs on Monday, March 10, 2025, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said that India-US are working towards a mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement instead of just immediate tariff adjustments. The Commerce Secretary said that negotiations are still going on between India and the US and no agreement has been reached on trade tariffs at the moment.

Expressing concern over this claim of US President Donald Trump, when the committee asked why India is not raising its voice against tariffs like Mexico, China and Canada, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said that India cannot be compared with these two countries. This is because America has security concerns and border immigration issues with both the countries. At the same time, he said that India can avoid reciprocal tariffs for the time being.
