Deepika Chikhalia Wasn't the First Choice for 'Sita' — Here's What Changed Everything

Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana remains the most iconic retelling of the Hindu epic on Indian television, and at the heart of it was Deepika Chikhalia’s portrayal of Mata Sita — a role that immortalized her in Indian pop culture. But what most fans don’t know is that Deepika initially refused to even audition for the role.

In an episode of The Kapil Sharma Show, Deepika revealed the lesser-known story behind her casting. Back in 1985, she was just 18 and working in Vikram Betaal, which aired on Doordarshan and starred Arun Govil. Incidentally, Ramayana was being cast on the same set by Ramanand Sagar, who was already observing actors for his ambitious mythological project.

"Why Should I Give a Screen Test?"

Deepika shared that someone from the crew, “Hari Bhai,” encouraged her to audition for Sita’s role. But she hesitated, saying, “I’ve already worked with them, why should I audition again?” However, when Ramanand Sagar himself requested her, she agreed — and ended up giving four separate screen tests before finally being selected.

From Actress to 'Devi'

Once Ramayana aired in 1987, Deepika’s transformation from actress to a near-mythical figure was complete. Such was the impact of her portrayal that people began treating her as the real Sita Mata — touching her feet in public and offering reverence usually reserved for deities. Even in later roles, she was constantly seen through the lens of her divine portrayal.

Alongside Arun Govil (as Shri Ram), their on-screen chemistry made audiences feel as though they were witnessing the real Ram-Sita. It created a legacy so strong that even decades later, newer adaptations have failed to match its emotional imprint.
