Cricket Returns to the Olympics After 128 Years: ICC and IOC Unveil Qualification Pathway for LA 2028

Cricket is set to make its long-awaited return to the Olympic Games after an absence of 128 years. The sport will feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in the T20 format, with separate men's and women's competitions. Each tournament will include just six teams, making qualification highly competitive. The qualification pathway has now been confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

With limited places available, every ICC ranking point and qualifying tournament will play a crucial role in determining which nations compete for Olympic medals.

Six Teams to Compete in Men's and Women's Events

The men's and women's Olympic cricket tournaments will each feature six teams.

The qualification system guarantees representation from four major cricket regions:

  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Europe
  • Oceania

The remaining qualification spots will be decided through ICC rankings and the inaugural ICC Olympics Qualifier, scheduled for 2027.

Four Women's Teams Have Already Secured Qualification

The ongoing 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup has confirmed the first four teams for the women's Olympic competition.

The qualified teams are:

  • India
  • Australia
  • Great Britain (represented through England)
  • South Africa

Each team earned qualification as the highest-ranked eligible nation from its respective continent. The remaining places will be filled through the qualification process.

How the Men's Qualification Process Will Work

Qualification for the men's tournament will primarily be based on the ICC Men's T20I rankings.

According to the approved pathway:

  • The highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania as of December 31, 2026, will qualify.
  • Teams must remain within the ICC Men's T20I Top 15 rankings during the qualification period to be eligible.
  • The final qualification berth will be decided through the ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.

Can Host Nation USA Qualify?

As the host nation, the United States has a pathway to the men's Olympic tournament, but it must still satisfy the eligibility criteria.

Under the approved system, the USA must feature in the ICC Men's T20I Top 15 rankings during the qualification window to secure its Olympic place. If it fails to meet that requirement, the host allocation will instead pass to the next eligible team based on the qualification rules.

ICC Olympics Qualifier to Decide Final Berths

The ICC will organize its first-ever Olympics Qualifier in 2027.

The tournament will feature eight teams, with the winner earning the final available Olympic qualification spot in both the men's and women's competitions. The event is expected to provide one last opportunity for nations that narrowly miss direct qualification through rankings.

Why the West Indies Cannot Compete as One Team

Unlike ICC tournaments, the West Indies cannot participate in the Olympics as a combined team because the Caribbean nations compete separately under the Olympic movement.

If a Caribbean nation becomes eligible through the qualification process, the ICC will organize a regional qualifying event to determine which National Olympic Committee (NOC) will represent the region at the global Olympic qualifier.

A Historic Return for Cricket

Cricket last appeared at the Olympic Games in 1900, making its return at LA28 one of the biggest milestones in the sport's modern history. With only six teams competing in each category, qualification is expected to be fiercely contested.

The introduction of a structured qualification pathway and the inaugural ICC Olympics Qualifier marks a significant step in expanding cricket's global reach while giving more nations an opportunity to compete on one of the world's biggest sporting stages.
