Covid cases are increasing in the country, infection is also increasing in newborns, how dangerous is the new variant

Corona cases have been reported in many parts of India. Even though the corona cases are under control, the danger of corona is not completely averted. The new variant JN.1 is similar to the old variant of Corona, Omicron. In such a situation, people should not be careless. Vigilance and awareness is the best way to avoid this virus.

The corona virus has once again knocked on the world's door. Its cases have started coming up especially in Singapore, Hong Kong and now in some states of India. This new variant is known as JN.1, which is a new form of the Omicron variant. Although governments and health departments are alert, the general public also has to be vigilant about their safety.

What is the JN.1 variant?

Corona's new variant JN.1 is part of Omicron's BA.2.86 lineage. This variant was first identified in August 2023. It has about 30 mutations, which help it escape the immune system and increase its ability to spread the infection. This is the reason why this variant has become a cause of concern in many countries of the world.

What is the situation in India?

The situation in India is currently under control. According to the Ministry of Health, till May 19, 2024, only 257 active cases have been found in the country, which is very less for a country like India. But the matter of concern is that the number of cases is increasing in states like Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Recently two patients have also died in Mumbai's KEM Hospital, which has increased vigilance further.

Is this variant more dangerous?

At present, there is no concrete evidence to say that the JN.1 variant is more dangerous than before. But people with weak immunity may be at greater risk. Experts say that it is important to be cautious, especially for the elderly and people who are already sick.

In which countries are cases increasing?

The highest number of new cases are being reported in Singapore and Hong Kong. About 3000 cases have been registered in Singapore from 1 to 19 May, while 30 people have died due to corona in Hong Kong so far. Cases are increasing rapidly there due to the LF.7 and NB.1.8 variants of the virus.

Is the vaccine effective?

According to a study, antibodies formed from previously taken vaccines or previous infections are less effective on this variant. However, the XBB.1.5 monovalent booster dose is believed to be effective in fighting JN.1. According to WHO, this booster dose helps in increasing antibodies in the body and can reduce the severity of the disease by 19% to 49%.
