Could tensions between Iran and the US exacerbate India's problems? What will be the impact?
India-Iran Relations: The conflict between the United States and Iran is currently at its peak. It is being reported that people in this Middle Eastern country are taking to the streets to protest the government led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Such large-scale anti-government protests have never been seen before in Iran's 47-year history. On December 28th, people took to the streets to protest the falling value of the rial against the US dollar and rising inflation.
Now the question arises: will the flames of this fire spreading in Iran also engulf India? Will this unrest in Iran also affect India? This question comes to mind because India is strategically and commercially connected to Iran. Let's understand this in a little more detail.
What is a matter of concern for India?
The deteriorating situation in Iran and rising tensions with the United States are of concern to India because it has invested heavily in several projects focused on expanding its reach to Central Asia, Russia, and Europe. The most significant of these is the Chabahar port on Iran's southeastern coast, a project on which India has spent millions of dollars. This port allows India to bypass Pakistan and directly access Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Why is Chabahar Port important?
Chabahar Port is also a key part of the International North-South Transport Corridor. This corridor, spanning over 7,000 kilometers, is a network of ship, rail, and road routes that connects India with Iran, as well as Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, the Middle East, and Europe. This makes the INSTC shorter than the Suez Canal route, reducing both time and cost for cargo transportation. This increases India's trade with many countries around the world, strengthening India's economy.
Trade between India and Iran
According to Commerce Department data, trade between India and Iran is substantial. In the 2024-25 financial year, it reached approximately US$1.68 billion. Of this, India exported goods worth US$1.24 billion, while imports amounted to just US$0.44 billion. Escalating tensions in Iran will reduce trade activity through the Chabahar port, potentially impacting trade through the INSTC.
