In a deeply tragic incident from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a 35-year-old laborer named Islam allegedly took his own life after reportedly facing prolonged mental and financial stress related to a marital dispute. According to the family, Islam had been under pressure following multiple legal cases filed by his wife and was struggling to pay a court-ordered maintenance amount of Rs 2.8 lakh.
Islam, who worked at a furniture factory, had been married to Shahana, a woman from the same neighborhood, for about five years. His family claims that the relationship deteriorated within months of marriage and that Shahana had left for her parental home, eventually filing several legal complaints against him.
Mounting Financial Pressure
The family says that the court's order to pay Rs 2.8 lakh in maintenance created a financial burden that Islam could not handle on his modest laborer's wages. Although he managed to pay Rs 60,000, he reportedly fell into debt trying to raise the remaining amount.
On April 5, Islam was found dead by suicide. His family alleges that on the same day, he was confronted and threatened on the road by his wife, her mother, and brothers, who allegedly demanded an additional Rs 25 lakh and threatened to kill him if he didn’t comply.
Family Alleges Harassment, Seeks Justice
The family has filed a complaint against Shahana and her family members at the Kotwali police station, alleging continued harassment and threats. Police have registered a case under Section 108 of the IPC, but no arrests have been made yet.
CO City Pankaj Srivastava confirmed that the case has been registered and is under investigation. Meanwhile, Islam’s family continues to appeal to the authorities for justice and accountability in the matter.
