Bangladesh makes a major U-turn on IPL 2026, no longer broadcasting; learn why the decision changed in two days.

IPL 2026 Bangladesh Broadcast: Two days ago, news came that permission has been granted to broadcast IPL 2026 in Bangladesh, but now this decision seems to be changing.

No IPL 2026 broadcast in Bangladesh

The 2026 Indian Premier League begins on Saturday, March 28th. On the same day, news broke that Zahir Uddin Swapan, the Information and Broadcasting Minister of Bangladesh's new government, had ordered the lifting of the ban on IPL broadcasts in the country. The Broadcasting Minister reportedly stated that politics should be kept separate from sports, which would mean there would be no ban on the broadcast of the Indian Premier League in Bangladesh.

But just two days later, on Monday, March 30th, news emerged that a major U-turn had been taken on the decision to lift the IPL broadcast ban in Bangladesh. Let's explore why the decision was reversed within two days.

Reports suggest that India's JioStar has terminated its agreement to broadcast the IPL in Bangladesh, making broadcasting the tournament in India's neighboring country virtually impossible.

Why did the agreement end?

According to Reuters, JioStar sent a letter to Bangladesh broadcaster TSports stating, "The agreement is terminated with immediate effect. Failure to adhere to the payment deadlines set out in the agreement and defaulting on payments were the reasons for this decision." It was also stated that this rule also applies to the Women's IPL, or Women's Premier League.

Why was the broadcast of IPL banned in Bangladesh?

In the IPL 2026 auction, Kolkata Knight Riders acquired Bangladeshi player Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.20 crore. At this time, violent protests were taking place in Bangladesh, with reports of oppression and atrocities against the minority Hindu population. This sparked protests in India demanding that Bangladeshi players not play in the IPL, and that's exactly what happened.

On the orders of BCCI, KKR released Mustafizur, after which the Bangladesh government decided to ban the broadcast of IPL in its country.
