HighLights

  1. The valleys in Pahalgam look deserted
  2. Shops were closed and people were not seen in the markets
  3. Due to lack of tourists, the business of the local people has come to a standstill

Razia Noor, Srinagar. Pahalgam Attack one Month: When the rays of the sun emerging from the shelter of the mountains fall on the velvety grass growing in Pahalgam through the deodar trees standing all around, it seems as if someone has threaded silver threads on the carpet.

The sound of the Lidar river flowing through the valley along with the sweet voices of the cuckoo and the nightingale has created a wonderful atmosphere. There is no one to witness this morning of Pahalgam which intoxicates the guests.

Even after 30 days of the Baisaran terror attack, the green valleys here look gloomy and the spring has become desolate. When the Jagran team investigated the situation, it found that the hotels were empty and the stoves of the restaurants were cold.

Beautiful view of Pahalgam

There is silence on the roads far and wide. When a vehicle passes by, noise is definitely heard, but within a few moments silence prevails again. Such a situation has been prevailing in Pahalgam for the last one month.

By the afternoon of 22nd April, the view of the valley was different. Tourists were coming to the canal from every side. Hotels, guest houses were full, one had to wait for turn to drink tea or water at restaurants and dhabas. It was difficult to get a horse for horse riding.

It was a tough job to find a vehicle to go to Betaab Valley, Aadu, Chandanwadi. Shopkeepers did not even have time to eat food. But on the afternoon of 22 April, the terrorists carried out the Baisaran attack and made not only Pahalgam but the entire valley desolate.

Baisaran valley is also deserted

Silence prevails in Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonmarg

The tourism industry of the valley has collapsed after the terrorist attack. Most of the tourist places in the valley including Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg are deserted. In this situation, the financial condition of the people associated with the tourism industry has become pitiable.

At the same time, the tourism department has also accepted that the tourism industry has been derailed due to this incident. According to the department, it will take time for the tourism industry to come back on track. They said that efforts will be made to attract tourists to the valley again.

Market closed, shops are shuttered

I can't believe this is the same Pahalgam: Rauf Ahmed

On talking to the people sitting on the bench near the taxi in the main market of Pahalgam, it was found that two of them used to drive tourist taxis there while one of them has a clothes shop in the main market of Pahalgam. When taxi driver Rauf Ahmed was asked what he was doing here, he became dejected and said that we come here every day to mourn our destruction.

Zubair Yatoo, who was sitting with Rauf, said that he could not believe that this was the same Pahalgam that used to be packed with guests these days.

Pointing towards the market, Zubair said, "You see the condition of the market yourself. Everything is at a standstill. I have a shop in the main market and I live in the nearby village Laripora. The shops are closed since that incident and I am fed up of sitting at home."

Kashmiris cannot forget the Baisaran incident: Taxi driver

Taxi driver Liaqat said that he has been driving taxi here for 16 years. He has never seen such a situation here. Tourists also came here during the Amarnath land movement in 2008. Tourists did not stop coming in 2010 and 2016 as well, but the terrorist attack in Baisaran shook the entire valley.

Liaquat said that Kashmiris can never forget what the terrorists did. They stained their hands with the blood of those innocent guests, gave their families irreparable wounds and also snatched the livelihood of our families.
