UPI: UPI payments have become a part of everyday life in India. From grocery stores to online shopping, UPI is used everywhere. As convenient as it is, it also carries with it significant risks. Cyber criminals are now employing innovative methods to trick people into making even the smallest mistake, which could empty their bank accounts in minutes.

How one wrong click can lead to a huge loss.

People are often sent payment requests or links via WhatsApp, SMS, or calls. These messages often appear to be from familiar names or bank names, leading people to unsuspectingly click Approve or Pay. This single click gives fraudsters access to your account. Remember, you never need to enter a PIN to receive money with UPI.

Beware of fake calls and fake messages.

Nowadays, fraudsters call, posing as bank employees, customer care agents, or delivery executives. They try to ask for a UPI PIN by promising a refund, KYC update, or a reward. Once a person shares their PIN, the fraudsters immediately complete the transaction. Banks or any other organization associated with UPI apps never ask for a PIN over the phone.

Avoid screen share and remote apps.

In many cases, scammers ask you to install apps like AnyDesk or TeamViewer. These apps allow them to take control of your phone and perform UPI transactions themselves. If anyone asks you to share your screen or grant remote access, refuse immediately.

Easy ways to stay safe

When using UPI, always remember not to accept any unknown requests. Never share your UPI PIN with anyone, no matter how trustworthy they appear to be. Always verify the receiver's name and amount before making a payment. Also, keep your UPI app updated to the latest version and use a screen lock on your phone.

What to do if you get scammed

If you accidentally become a victim of UPI fraud, immediately contact your bank and the UPI app's customer service. Also, file a complaint with the 1930 cyber helpline number or report it on cybercrime.gov.in. Filing a complaint quickly increases your chances of getting your money back.
