The political temperature in Assam has intensified as Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during an election rally. Addressing a gathering in Karbi Anglong, the Congress leader accused the state leadership of corruption and alleged a nexus involving top central leaders.
Rahul Gandhi’s Strong Allegations Against Assam CM
Speaking at the rally, Rahul Gandhi described Himanta Biswa Sarma as “one of the most corrupt chief ministers in the country.” He further claimed that the Assam government, in coordination with Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, is running what he termed a “land ATM” in the state.
According to Gandhi, large tracts of land are allegedly being taken from ordinary citizens and handed over to select corporate groups. He claimed that nearly 98,400 bighas of land have been allocated to a few major business houses.
The Congress leader also asserted that if his party comes to power in Assam, strict action would be taken against those involved in alleged irregularities.
Attack Over India–US Trade Deal
Apart from state-level issues, Rahul Gandhi also criticized the central government over the India–US trade agreement. He argued that the deal disproportionately benefits the United States while putting Indian interests at risk.
Gandhi alleged that sectors such as agriculture, energy, data security, and small businesses could face adverse consequences due to the agreement. He further claimed that the deal was made under pressure and does not serve the long-term interests of India.
Concerns Raised About Farmers
Highlighting the impact on agriculture, Gandhi warned that Indian farmers could be significantly affected. He stated that opening markets for crops like soybeans, pulses, fruits, and cotton to foreign competition could harm domestic producers.
According to him, the agreement may create an uneven playing field, making it difficult for local farmers to compete with large international corporations.
Promise of Action in Jubin Garg Case
During his speech, Gandhi also mentioned the late singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away last year. He said the artist represented the voice of Assam and its people.
The Congress leader promised that if his party forms the government in the state, it will initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death within 100 days.
Political Battle Heats Up in Assam
The remarks have added fuel to an already intense political contest in Assam. With elections approaching, both ruling and opposition parties are stepping up their campaigns, focusing on governance, development, and allegations of corruption.
While the ruling party has yet to respond in detail to these specific claims, the exchange of sharp political statements indicates that the campaign season is entering a more aggressive phase.
Conclusion
The latest remarks by Rahul Gandhi underline the high-stakes nature of the Assam elections. Allegations around land deals, economic policies, and governance are expected to dominate the political discourse in the coming weeks.
As voters prepare to make their decision, the focus will remain on how these claims are addressed and what vision each party presents for the future of the state.
