The political battle in Assam has intensified further as Asaduddin Owaisi launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party over the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Speaking during his visit to Guwahati, the AIMIM chief alleged that the proposal is being used as a tool to impose a specific legal framework under a different name.
Owaisi Questions Intent Behind UCC
Addressing the media, Asaduddin Owaisi argued that the idea of UCC, as being discussed, contradicts the spirit of the Constitution. He stated that freedom of religion is a fundamental right and any attempt to override personal laws must be carefully examined.
According to him, the push for UCC is effectively an attempt to introduce provisions similar to the Hindu Code Bill under a broader label. He described such a move as “unconstitutional” and against the principles of equality and justice outlined in the Constitution.
Allegations of ‘Politics of Division’ in Assam
Owaisi also targeted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing the state government of promoting divisive politics. He claimed that under the current leadership, social tensions have increased and minority communities are facing challenges.
The AIMIM leader further alleged that thousands of homes belonging to Muslims have been demolished in recent actions, leaving many families displaced. These remarks added a sharp edge to the ongoing political discourse in the state.
Criticism of Congress’ Role
In his speech, Asaduddin Owaisi also criticized the Indian National Congress, saying the party has failed to effectively counter the BJP’s rise in Assam.
He claimed that the Congress’ political strategy allowed leaders like Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP to strengthen their position in the state.
Support for AIUDF in Assam
Owaisi is currently on a two-day visit to Assam to campaign in support of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), led by Badruddin Ajmal.
He emphasized the importance of backing regional alliances to protect the constitutional rights of minorities and ensure balanced political representation.
BJP Responds to Owaisi’s Remarks
Reacting to Owaisi’s statements, BJP MP Arun Govil said that while Owaisi is an educated and articulate leader, such remarks raise questions about his intent.
The exchange highlights the growing intensity of political rhetoric as elections approach.
Political Climate Heats Up Ahead of Elections
With leaders from multiple parties actively campaigning, the electoral contest in Assam is becoming increasingly competitive. Issues such as UCC, governance, minority rights, and development are dominating the narrative.
As the campaign progresses, voters are expected to weigh these arguments carefully before heading to the polls.
Conclusion
The remarks by Asaduddin Owaisi have added another layer to the political debate surrounding UCC and governance in Assam.
With strong opinions emerging from all sides, the coming weeks are likely to witness even sharper exchanges as parties intensify their efforts to influence voters ahead of the elections.
