Argentina trailed 2-0 until the 79th minute, but three goals in the final 13-14 minutes from Romero, Messi, and Enzo Fernandez secured victory. This marked the first time in a World Cup that a team had won in 90 minutes after trailing by two goals until the 78th minute.
Egypt opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Ibrahim scored the first goal. Mustafa Zico then added the second in the 67th minute. Argentina then opened the scoring with a flurry of goals. Romero scored the first goal in the 79th minute. The legendary Messi then added the second in the 83rd minute. Fernandez then sealed the victory with the third goal in the 90th minute.
Messi missed two penalties in a single World Cup – Messi's penalty shot was saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. This made Messi the first player in World Cup history to miss two penalties in a single World Cup.
This became one of the most controversial matches of the 2026 World Cup. Egypt's coach accused FIFA of fixing the match – claiming it was Messi's World Cup.
