The government recently revoked Reliance Communications' spectrum. The DoT took this decision with immediate effect, dealing a major blow to Anil Ambani. Let's explore the reasons behind this decision.
Reliance Communications faces a major dispute with the government.
Significant news has emerged regarding Reliance Communications (RCOM). The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has revoked the spectrum allocated to the company and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Reliance Telecom Limited (RTL), with immediate effect. This means the company will no longer be able to operate telecom services using this spectrum.
The company informed the stock exchanges that it had received letters from the DoT on October 5, 2026, informing it of the termination of spectrum awarded under the spectrum auctions held in 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Why was the spectrum revoked?
According to the DoT, Reliance Communications failed to comply with certain spectrum-related conditions, such as the rollout requirements for network launches and the agreed-upon payment for the spectrum. The department stated that the company had not paid spectrum installments, spectrum usage charges (SUC), and certain other outstanding dues. The rollout conditions for the spectrum auctioned in 2010 were also not met.
The company
cited the ongoing insolvency and bankruptcy process (CIRP) and the protections it enjoys under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. However, the DoT did not accept these arguments.
The DoT's action follows the Supreme Court's
's decision of February 13, 2026. The company had also filed a review petition against this decision, but according to the DoT, the Supreme Court dismissed this review petition on August 7, 2026.
What will be the impact on the company?
DoT has directed Reliance Communications and Reliance Telecom to cease all wireless networks and services based on that spectrum. This decision could impact the company's financial and business situation. RCOM is currently undergoing an insolvency resolution process. The company's proposed resolution plan included selling the spectrum as an asset. This proposal is currently under consideration before the NCLT, Mumbai.
