According to a report by Brazilian media outlet Globo, the incident dates back to March 2026, when the Cape Verde team traveled to New Zealand to play in a FIFA series. A Brazilian woman accompanied the team on that tour as a translator. The translator alleges that Ryan Mendes forcibly entered her room at an Auckland hotel and physically and sexually assaulted her.

The incident was reported to the local police, followed by a medical examination. According to Brazilian media reports, the medical report revealed injuries to the body, including to the vagina, breasts, and lips. The report also stated that the woman reported the incident to officials associated with the Cape Verde team, but received no response. New Zealand police are currently investigating the matter. The allegations have not yet been officially proven.

FIFA also responded to the incident. USA Today quoted FIFA as saying, "We take any misconduct seriously. We are in contact with New Zealand authorities regarding the matter. The investigation is ongoing, so we cannot comment further."
