New vacancy in BCCI

Ajit Agarkar's tenure as Chief Selector has officially ended. On Tuesday, the BCCI announced a new vacancy for a position in the selection committee. The current selection committee consists of Pragyan Ojha, RP Singh, Shiv Sunder Das, and Ajay Ratra. Following Agarkar's term, Pragyan Ojha currently holds the position of interim Chief Selector.

The BCCI has announced the acceptance of applications for a selection committee member. This member will play a key role in the selection of players for Team India in Test, ODI, and T20I formats.

Ajit Agarkar assumed the position of Chief Selector in July 2023. According to reports, his term ends on October 4, 2026. Agarkar has also been in the news in recent months for excluding Rohit Sharma from the 2027 World Cup plans. It should be noted that the selection committee member with the most Test match experience is appointed Chief Selector.

Qualifications for the new position:

  • Applicant should have experience of at least 7 Test matches or
  • Experience of 30 first-class matches or
  • Experience of 10 ODI matches and 20 first-class matches
  • The applicant must have retired at least 5 years ago.

One of the first three options has to be completed and a cool-off period of 5 years is mandatory after retirement.

The BCCI will accept applications for this new vacancy in the selection committee until October 14th at 5 pm. First, there will be a screening and shortlisting process, after which applicants will be called for personal interviews. It's worth noting that the coming year could be very challenging for the selection committee, as preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup have already begun, and assembling the perfect combination within the next few months will be a major challenge for the selectors.
