Before the Champions Trophy 2025, Team India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar can make four big changes in the team. Also, he can go with a new captain in ODIs and Tests, after which Rohit may be dropped.
Ajit Agarkar: Before the Champions Trophy 2025, there is a possibility of four big changes in Team India. Indian team's chief selector Ajit Agarkar has decided to appoint new captains in ODIs and Tests. Suryakumar Yadav will remain the captain of the T20I team and there will be no tampering with his captaincy in any way. Actually, India has to play the T20I World Cup at home in 2026 and Team India's performance under Suryakumar is continuously increasing, after which he is sure to remain the captain, but BCCI has started looking for a new captain in ODIs and Tests.
Will Rohit be out?
According to the Times of India report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India and Ajit Agarkar are already planning to prepare a road map for the 2027 World Cup. The BCCI is already preparing to build a strong team in the 2027 ODI, in which captain Rohit Sharma is nowhere to be seen. While as captain, he can make Shubman Gill the next captain.
After Gambhir's arrival, Gill has been made the vice-captain in the ODI format, after which it is certain that young opener Shubman Gill can become India's next ODI captain. At the same time, BCCI and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are also considering Virat Kohli's future. However, there are reports that Virat Kohli can remain a part of the ODI team till 2027.
BCCI wants to make changes in Tests
After the crushing defeat in Australia and New Zealand, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has come into action mode. BCCI wants to start a phase of change in Tests and in such a situation it is looking for a permanent captain. Earlier, in the review meeting held in Mumbai on January 11, many questions were asked to captain Rohit Sharma about the future, in which the captain himself said that he will remain the captain for 2-3 months and after that he will leave the captaincy, till then he can look for another captain. After this, it seems that Rohit Sharma can retire after the Champions Trophy 2025.
Search for permanent captain
After Virat Kohli left the captaincy, BCCI handed over the command of all three formats to Rohit Sharma, but after winning the T20I World Cup in 2024, he retired from T20. After this, after his poor performance in Tests, the demand for retirement started rising. Along with increasing age, his form also remains a matter of concern. While BCCI can discuss Rohit's future after Champions Trophy 2025 as it wants to find a permanent captain before the World Test Championship cycle and ODI World Cup 2027.
In the race for Test captaincy, it seems a bit difficult for Jasprit Bumrah to become the captain because after his injury, the team management has to turn to a new captain, after which Pant's performance in Tests can make him the captain. Gill is also a contender to become the captain in Tests, but due to his poor performance, BCCI is currently not looking at him as the captain in Tests. At the same time, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal can also be seen captaining the Test team in the future.
