Following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, two prominent Indian politicians from opposing sides of the political spectrum—AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor—have taken assertive stances against Pakistan, reinforcing India’s response through military and diplomatic channels.
While Owaisi has strongly supported the Indian Army’s targeted strikes through Operation Sindoor, Shashi Tharoor has engaged with the international community to highlight India’s justification for the operation. Both leaders, in their own ways, have emerged as voices countering Pakistan's narrative on terrorism and regional security.
Tharoor's International Offensive to Defend India's Action
After Operation Sindoor, which saw Indian forces carry out precision strikes on terror hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Tharoor has taken an active role in briefing the international media. Emphasizing the symbolic and emotional significance of the operation, he described it as a tribute to the victims of the Pahalgam attack, likening the national sentiment to a newly-widowed bride mourning beside her slain husband.
Speaking at various forums, Tharoor has underscored that India’s action was a "calibrated and limited response" targeting terrorist infrastructure—not the Pakistani military or government institutions. He reiterated that the operation was designed to avoid civilian casualties and focused exclusively on terror bases including those of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba.
“India does not want war,” Tharoor stated, “but if provoked, the country is prepared to respond decisively.”
Diplomatic Messaging to the World—and to China
Leveraging his background as a former diplomat and Minister of State for External Affairs, Tharoor has launched a nuanced diplomatic campaign. He highlighted that global powers such as Russia, France, and Israel acknowledged India’s right to self-defense. Tharoor also indirectly addressed China, noting its relatively muted response this time around and hinting that Beijing may be recalibrating its stance due to growing economic dependencies on India.
“China knows where its long-term interests lie,” said Tharoor, suggesting that strategic shifts may be underway in the region.
Owaisi Adopts Nationalist Tone, Calls Out Pakistan
In a rare display of political convergence, Asaduddin Owaisi has backed the government’s strong action against terrorism. Known for his vocal stance on minority issues, Owaisi surprised many by donning a tricolor turban and delivering fiery speeches condemning Pakistan.
While in Kashmir on the day of the operation, Owaisi raised patriotic slogans such as “Pakistan Murdabad” and “Hindustan Zindabad”. He praised the Indian military for their swift and targeted response, and urged Pakistan to dismantle its terror infrastructure in PoK.
“It is no longer the time for dialogue,” Owaisi said, “Pakistan must be given a reply that ensures there’s no repeat of a Pahalgam.”
His remarks are being viewed as a repositioning of his image—transforming from a community-centric leader to a more assertive national voice.
Unified Political Front Against Terrorism
The support from both Tharoor and Owaisi reflects a rare moment of political unity in India’s response to cross-border terrorism. While Tharoor continues to shape international opinion, Owaisi’s vocal support has further narrowed the space for Pakistan’s global narrative.
As Operation Sindoor continues to be a talking point domestically and internationally, the evolving roles of these leaders demonstrate a shift in India’s political discourse—where national security may increasingly transcend party lines.
