Adani Airports takes major decision, redeveloping part of Mumbai Airport's T1

Mumbai International Airport Limited, operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), has announced the partial redevelopment of the northern portion of Terminal 1B at Mumbai Airport. This decision was made due to safety concerns regarding the nearly 60-year-old building. The redevelopment will begin in January next year.

According to information provided by Adani Airports, approximately 55 million passengers travel through Mumbai Airport each year. During this redevelopment, only 5 million passengers, or approximately 9%, will be temporarily affected. The remaining 91% of passenger traffic will remain unaffected.

To maintain the convenience of airlines and passengers, the Adani Group has offered airlines the option to temporarily transfer their flights to Navi Mumbai International Airport. MIAL will provide full support to airlines during this transition.

Why was this decision taken?

Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, stated, "Renovating the aging infrastructure was crucial. The fire at Terminal 1 in April this year further increased the risk. With the Navi Mumbai airport now operational, we have a better option to allow for phased operations without completely shutting down Terminal 1." He also clarified that the flight relocation to Navi Mumbai is only temporary, not permanent.

Upon completion of the redevelopment, Terminal 1's passenger capacity will increase by 33%, from 15 million passengers per year to 20 million passengers per year. Furthermore, all historical airline slots will be retained, and new slots will be made available.

Discounts for international flights at Navi Mumbai Airport

To attract international flights, Navi Mumbai International Airport is offering a 100% discount on landing fees for new international flights. Plans are also underway to provide cash vouchers to passengers to cover the difference between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports' user development fees (UDF).
