West Bengal: Action has been taken against the Dinajpur BDO office for vandalism in protest against the ongoing SIR process in Bengal. An FIR has been registered in this matter.

 

 

An FIR has been filed in connection with the vandalism at a video office in North Dinajpur, West Bengal. Violent protests against the SIR erupted in Chakulia, a district in North Dinajpur, bordering Kishanganj. Protesters vandalized the Block Development Officer's office and set fires on the road, disrupting traffic. 

Dissatisfaction was seen due to the verification being done in SIR.

According to reports, local residents were upset by the repeated issuance of notices for verification hearings regarding the Special Intensive Revision of the Voter List. Protesters alleged that they were being harassed by repeated summons to hearings. The protesters vandalized the Block Development Officer's office and set valuable items on fire, causing significant damage to office documents and furniture.

The protesters also targeted other offices and scuffled with the police who

arrived at the scene. According to reports, the Chakulia police station chief and other police personnel were injured in the violence. The mob also vandalized police vehicles.

Police are trying to restore peace in the area.

Protesters had blocked the road since morning by burning tires. Police are working to restore peace, and the district is on high alert. Police have fired several rounds of tear gas. Following the incident, a large police force has been deployed in the area.

Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in West Bengal this year

. The next assembly elections in West Bengal are expected to be held in 2026. Elections for the 294-member West Bengal Legislative Assembly are expected to be held in March-April 2026. An official announcement has not yet been made. The current assembly's term will expire on May 7, 2026.
