A new arrangement for the safety of teen users, ChatGPT will now estimate age. This is how the feature will work.

Now, to enhance teen safety, ChatGPT has introduced an age prediction system. The platform will automatically estimate a user's age.

ChatGPT will now estimate a user's age.

To strengthen the safety of teen users on its platform, OpenAI has launched an age prediction system on ChatGPT. This system will determine a user's age based on various age signals. If it detects a user under 18, it will apply additional safety settings to provide a safer experience appropriate for their age. Let's explore how this system will work and how ChatGPT will determine a user's age.

How will the age be determined?

ChatGPT says it will use a special age prediction model that estimates a user's age based on a combination of behavioral and account-level signals. This will take into account the account's longevity, its activity time, its usage patterns, and the user's stated age at sign-up. The company says it can use various indicators to determine whether an account belongs to a minor or is over 18. After the rollout, this model will continue to be refined based on user feedback.

What if the age is not estimated correctly?

OpenAI says that if the model can't accurately determine a user's age, it will activate a safety setting. If a user believes the system mistakenly identified them as under 18, they can complete their verification process using a selfie.

Teen users will not see such content.

Similarly, if a user is under 18, the chatbot will reduce the exposure to sensitive and potentially harmful content. The company has stated that content containing graphic violence, potentially harmful viral challenges, sexual, romantic, or violent role-play, extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting, and body shaming will be restricted for users under 18.
