However, the Supreme Court has declared Trump's tariff decision illegal. Recently, as part of the India-US trade deal, the Trump administration had announced a reduction in tariffs on India to 18%. Now, following the US court's order, people are wondering how much tariff India will have to pay.

How much tariff will Trump charge from India now?

The India-US trade deal could be finalized by March 2026. Following the US court's decision, President Trump announced a new global 10 percent tariff, effective immediately. Consequently, India will now be subject to a 10 percent tariff instead of the current 18 percent. Earlier this month, when the US and India announced agreement on a framework for an interim trade agreement, Trump issued an executive order removing the 25 percent punitive tariff imposed on India for its purchases of Russian oil.

The US President stated that India had committed to stop importing energy directly or indirectly from Moscow and to purchase American energy products. Following the court's decision, Trump signed a proclamation stating that the temporary import duties were being imposed to address fundamental international payment problems and rebalance our trade relationship in the interest of American workers, farmers, and manufacturers.

What did Trump say about the India-US trade deal?

 Hours after the court's decision, when asked at the White House on Friday (February 20, 2026) whether the framework of the proposed interim trade agreement with India would remain in place after the Supreme Court's decision, Trump said, "Nothing wAccording to Trump's announcement, a 10 percent import duty based on the value of goods imported into the US will be imposed for a period of 150 days.ill change, and India will have to pay the duty." However, the White House later clarified that legally, a 10 percent tariff will still be imposed on India. 

Trump announces 10% tariff on all countries

A White House official said, "All countries with trade agreements with the United States will now be subject to a temporary 10 percent tariff." However, according to a White House fact sheet, a 50 percent tariff under Section 232 on steel and aluminum, and a 25 percent tariff on some auto parts, will remain in effect. An Indian government delegation is expected to visit Washington, D.C., next week to seek clarity on this issue.
