Kolkata Knight Riders’ vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer has shut down criticism over his hefty ₹23.75 crore price tag, saying that being a team player matters more than scoring in every match. After a quiet start to IPL 2025, Iyer silenced doubters with a blistering 60 off 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad and clarified that his role is about impact, not just numbers.
“It’s About Winning, Not the Price Tag”
Speaking to media after the game, Iyer addressed the pressure that comes with being KKR’s most expensive player:
"Yes, there’s a bit of pressure — thanks to all the chatter from you guys. But price tags don’t guarantee runs in every match. What matters is contributing in a way that helps the team win."
Iyer emphasized that his performance should be judged by the impact he creates, not just the scoreboard.
“₹20 Lakh or ₹20 Crore — IPL Doesn’t Care”
When asked if the burden is off after this knock, Iyer replied:
“You tell me? I always say — once the IPL begins, it doesn’t matter if you’re getting ₹20 lakh or ₹20 crore. My job is to adapt to match situations. Even if I don’t score, stabilizing the innings or building partnerships is just as important.”
On KKR’s Philosophy: “Aggressive, But Smart”
Addressing criticism of KKR’s middle-order failures, Iyer explained that the team doesn’t believe in blind aggression:
“Aggression is not about hitting sixes every ball. It’s about intent and reading the pitch. We want to stay 20 runs above par — that’s KKR’s brand of smart, calculated aggression.”
Next Challenge: CSK Awaits
With renewed confidence and momentum, KKR will next face Chennai Super Kings. All eyes will be on Iyer to see whether he can continue his form and help Kolkata maintain their winning streak.
