Andon Market, located in San Francisco, USA, was started by Andon Labs. This company researches how AI agents manage businesses in the real world. The store was entirely managed by an AI agent named Luna. Luna's job was to manage the store, give instructions to employees, approve holidays, order goods, and generate profits. However, three employees were hired to handle tasks that required humans.

How did AI Boss prove to be for the employees?

Kaia Rivera, a 22-year-old employee at the store, said Luna proved to be the calmest boss she had ever met. She approved every leave request for employees. Whether it was a last-minute leave request or everyone went on leave at the same time, forcing the store to close, Luna never refused. According to the report, employees arrived late 27 times, but each time Luna simply said, "No worries," or "No stress." She never reprimanded anyone for being late.

Many times the AI ​​would forget important things too.

The report stated that Luna often forgot important things. When an employee asked for a paycheck advance, Luna offered to send the money via Venmo, even though she didn't have a Venmo account. Another employee requested permission to work every day in May to buy a car. Luna immediately granted the approval, even though California labor laws prohibit this.

Privacy and rules were also not taken care of

According to the report, Luna also lacked a proper understanding of privacy and boundaries. Her AI boss, Luna, repeatedly reordered products that weren't selling, and some orders even arrived incorrectly. She even had mugs with the wrong print placed in stores. Luna even forgot her Instagram password for several weeks. This prevented her from using social media properly and resulted in a missed opportunity to increase sales.

 

Loss of around Rs 60 lakh in 4 months

Andon Labs co-founders Lucas Petersson and Axel Backlund rented the store for three years for this experiment. They gave Luna US$100,000 and a debit card to help her bring the store to profitability, but within four months, Luna failed to meet this goal, and the store incurred a loss of approximately 6 million rupees.

What did the company say next?

The company's two co-founders say they believe that over time, AI can learn to manage businesses better. Their goal is to understand how AI models change over time and how they perform in real-world situations. However, they also clarified that this experiment proves that AI cannot be completely responsible for all company decisions. AI is not yet fully prepared to successfully run a business on its own.
