The most important test to check the health of the kidney is the kidney function test. It is also called renal function test. In this, the functioning of the kidney is checked on several parameters with the help of blood and urine.

Kidney disease has become a serious problem in India. In fact, kidney problems are increasing rapidly due to diabetes, high blood pressure, unhealthy lifestyle and genetic problems. When the kidney does not function properly, many serious symptoms like fatigue, swelling, blood in urine and frequent urination at night start occurring. In such a situation, it is very important to get the kidney checked at the right time. Now the question arises that which tests should be done to detect kidney problems and how much money does it cost?
This test reveals kidney problems
The most important test to find out the health of the kidney is the kidney function test (KFT). It is also called renal function test (RFT). In this, the functioning of the kidney is tested on several parameters with the help of blood and urine. Let us tell you about these parameters.
Serum Creatinine: This is a waste product formed from muscle metabolism. If the kidney is not functioning properly, the level of creatinine in the blood increases. The normal level of creatinine should be 0.7-1.3 mg/dL in men and 0.6-1.1 mg/dL in women.
Blood urea nitrogen (BUN): It is a waste product formed by the breakdown of protein, increased levels of which indicate kidney failure, dehydration or a high protein diet. Its normal range should be 7-20 mg/dL.
Uric acid: It is formed by the breakdown of purines, which the kidney excretes through urine. Its increased level indicates kidney failure or gout. Its normal range is 3.4-7.0 mg/dL for men and 2.4-6.0 mg/dL for women.
Electrolytes: Sodium, potassium and chloride maintain the balance of water and minerals in the body. Wrong levels of these can be a sign of kidney failure.
Glomerular filtration rate (eGFR): This test measures how well the kidneys are filtering blood. An eGFR of more than 90 mL/min is considered normal, while less than 60 increases the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). In many cases, tests such as urinalysis or microalbumin are also done, which can detect protein leakage or infection from the kidneys.
How much does a KFT test cost?
The charge for kidney test KFT is different in different states of the country. In Delhi-NCR, KFT test is done for Rs 349 to Rs 780. In Mumbai-Pune of Maharashtra, the charge for this test is from Rs 375 to Rs 1250. In Lucknow-Kanpur of UP, the charge for KFT test is between Rs 300 to Rs 1000. Apart from this, the cost of KFT test in Jaipur, Rajasthan is between Rs 400 to Rs 900. In Patna, Bihar, the charge for KFT test is between Rs 300 to Rs 700.
What is important to do before KFT test?
Fasting is usually not required for the KFT test, but some doctors recommend fasting for 8-12 hours. It is important to drink enough water before the test, as dehydration can affect the test results. If you are taking any medicine or supplement, then tell the doctor before the test.
