Yes, the 'Chaplin Cinema' built in Kolkata, formerly known as 'Elphinstone Picture Palace', was India's first cinema theatre. It was built in 1907 by Jamshedji Framji Madan. Watching cinema was a new and unique experience at that time, and this theatre became a major attraction for people.

Chaplin Cinema was built at 5/1, Chowringhee Place in Kolkata. Jamshedji's story is no less interesting. He started working as a small helper in 'Elphinstone Drama Club'.
This club later became very famous and showed its shows all over the world. Later Jamsetji decided to settle in Kolkata. He bought the famous 'Corinthian Hall' drama theatre and started bioscope shows in the Maidan area in 1902. Then in 1907 he built the 'Elphinstone Picture Palace'.
Became famous because of Hollywood movies
Later, the name of this theatre was changed to 'Minerva'. It became very famous for showing Hollywood movies. But with time, the theatre suffered due to increasing political turmoil and unrest in the country. To save it, it was named 'Chaplin Cinema' after the famous actor Charlie Chaplin. However, this theatre could not last long and was demolished in 2003.
