WhatsApp is preparing to roll out one of its biggest privacy upgrades in years by introducing usernames, allowing users to connect without revealing their mobile numbers. The upcoming feature will provide an additional layer of privacy while keeping phone-number-based account registration intact.

Once the feature is fully launched, users will be able to start conversations by entering another person's exact username.

Unlike several competing messaging platforms, WhatsApp is not expected to provide:

• Suggested username searches.
• Similar account recommendations.

This means users must know the exact username before initiating a conversation, reducing the chances of unwanted messages.

New Security Features to Prevent Abuse

To strengthen privacy and reduce scams, WhatsApp is introducing multiple safeguards alongside usernames.

One of the reported protections is a Username Key, which may require unknown users to enter an additional verification key before sending the first message.

The platform will also display additional account information whenever someone receives a message from an unfamiliar user.

The information card may include details such as:

• Whether the account is newly created.
• The sender's country or region.
• Any mutual WhatsApp groups shared between both users.

Recipients will be able to:

• Save the contact.
• Block the account.

Username Rules

WhatsApp has outlined several rules for creating usernames.

A valid username can:

• Contain between 3 and 35 characters.
• Include Latin letters, numbers, periods, and underscores.
• Begin with the "@" symbol when displayed.

However, usernames cannot:

• Consist only of numbers.
• Include prohibited words or phrases.
• Duplicate an existing username.

The app is also expected to offer automatic username suggestions if the preferred option is unavailable.

Measures Against Impersonation

The introduction of usernames has raised concerns about fake profiles and online scams, particularly in markets with a large WhatsApp user base.

To address these concerns, WhatsApp says it has implemented several protections.

According to the company:

• Usernames belonging to celebrities, government organisations, public figures, and verified Meta accounts are reserved.
• Similar-looking usernames that could mislead users may also be restricted.
• Automated systems will detect suspicious behaviour, impersonation attempts, and abuse patterns.
• Accounts involved in scams or repeated misuse may have their usernames removed or be permanently banned.

The company also plans to limit how frequently usernames can be changed to reduce misuse.

Can You Use Your Facebook or Instagram Username?

Meta is allowing many users to claim the same username they already use on Facebook or Instagram.

To reserve the same identity across platforms, users may need to connect their WhatsApp account with the Meta Accounts Center.

Those who prefer not to link their accounts will still be free to choose a completely different username exclusively for WhatsApp.

End-to-End Encryption Will Remain Unchanged

Despite the new username system, WhatsApp has confirmed that its core privacy protections will continue.

Personal messages and voice or video calls will remain protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning only the sender and recipient can access the content.

The company also states that WhatsApp contact lists will not be shared across other Meta platforms.
